Nearly 20% fewer international students traveled to the US in August -  The number of international students arriving in the U.S. in August fell by 19 percent this year compared with last year, the largest decline on record outside of the pandemic.  The decline is occurring as the Trump administration has  delayed visa processing , instituted  travel bans  or restrictions for 19 countries,  threatened to deport  international students for  pro-Palestinian speech , and  heightened the vetting  of student visa applicants.         The data, based on   arrival records   of international student visitors, includes both new international students entering the U.S. and existing international students returning to the country. That means we don’t know the number of   new   students alone.  But in the past, August arrivals have been a reas...

Safety and Security Report reveals uptick in on-campus crime at Stanford -                  The annual report is published in compliance with the federal law. The report’s crime statistics include alleged offenses, including attempts, reported to university staff or police within the 2024 calendar year, as well as data from the prior two years. It also contains helpful information and tips on personal safety and emergency preparedness, such as how to report a crime, what to do in an emergency, and how the university’s mass notification system works.  “We have thousands of students, faculty, staff, and visitors on campus every day, and we strive to ensure their safety,” said DPS Chief Laura Wilson. “This annual report helps keep the Stanford community informed of crime that occurs here. It also gives people clear guidance on how they can help support campus safety.” ( Stanford Report )     ...

Parents seek answers after teacher allegedly touches student inappropriately at school - September 23rd -                A 10-year-old girl—just a fifth grader—coming home from school with a story no parent ever wants to hear. She says she was touched inappropriately by a teacher. Her parents now speaking out—telling us about the incident, the video evidence, and the silence they say they’ve faced from school officials.  “I wouldn’t have sent her to that school if I would’ve known that they weren’t going to protect her they way that they said they were going to,” says Ashleigh the child’s mother.  It began in the family kitchen one evening after school. A little girl, just 10 years old, quietly approaching her father, Rocky—confiding in him about something that left her shaken.  He says his daughter had the courage to speak up. “She asked me to talk about something.       With the rise in popularity and use of AI it is inevitable that it will be integrated into journalism. I think that it is important going forward that we use AI to aid in journalism and not take it over. I think that would be detrimental to the field, and I'm going to go over a few reasons why. This is a story from a journalism student in his second year of graduate school   "There has been a growing discomfort among both students and faculty regarding how professional writers are meant to compete against fast, efficient language models that do not require time off, benefits, or empathy.  My courses have started assigning exercises specifically designed to acquaint students with ChatGPT. One asked that we paste rough drafts of our theses into the language model and ask the AI to evaluate the working product. Students voiced collective discomfort with this assignment, due to language models’ murky privacy policies: my peers worried OpenAI would feed of...
