03 - Artificial Intelligence in Journalism - Isaiah Calvert

Image
With the rise in popularity and use of AI it is inevitable that it will be integrated into journalism. I think that it is important going forward that we use AI to aid in journalism and not take it over. I think that would be detrimental to the field, and I'm going to go over a few reasons why. This is a story from a journalism student in his second year of graduate school   "There has been a growing discomfort among both students and faculty regarding how professional writers are meant to compete against fast, efficient language models that do not require time off, benefits, or empathy.  My courses have started assigning exercises specifically designed to acquaint students with ChatGPT. One asked that we paste rough drafts of our theses into the language model and ask the AI to evaluate the working product. Students voiced collective discomfort with this assignment, due to language models’ murky privacy policies: my peers worried OpenAI would feed of...

02 - Misinformation or Disinformation in Mass Media - Isaiah Calvert

I thought it would be good to start with the actual definitions of Misinformation and Disinformation. Misinformation is  false or  inaccurate  information, especially that which is  deliberately  intended to  deceive . Disinformation is  false information that is intended to  mislead , especially  propaganda  issued by a government organization to a rival power or the media. So while they are similar, they do have some key differences. " Misinformation is false or inaccurate information—getting the facts wrong. Disinformation is false information which is deliberately intended to mislead—intentionally misstating the facts. " ( American Psychological Association ). With both misinformation and disinformation so prominent today. It is extremely hard to decipher what news is real and what news is intentionally misleading you. However, there are some good resources you can use to fact-check media, and on th...

01 - Defining News - Isaiah Calvert

Image
The actual definition of news in the dictionary is: News received or noteworthy information, especially about recent or important events.  I think that is a perfect way to describe what news is, but I would like to go into that a little bit more. Everyone's definition of news is different, maybe not the actual definition, but at least what information people consider news. So, in terms of what news actually is, I would say it varies from person to person because one person might see some information and not consider it to be news, while another person can see the same thing and think it's not news at all. Does that cause it to not be news anymore? No, but it does mean that It is not news to a group of individuals, which will be the case for all information. Some people just wont find it interesting or noteworthy.      News can come in so many various forms and it's interesting to look at the ways people have gotten it th...
