10 - Listening Posts Community - Isaiah Calvert

 


    This is my first time ever looking up what a listening post is. But the definition of a listening post is "a station for intercepting electronic communications". So today I will be talking about the KVMA  licensed in magnolia Arkansas. The station is currently owned by the Noalmark Broadcasting Corporation. This stations is a sports broadcasting station. 


    Before the station was a sports broadcasting station it was many other things back in the 60's and 70's it was apparently well-known for the "Mary K Show" with host Mary K. Wyrick. since then it has been a music station I believe, Then on April 3rd 2023 they switched to programming from the fox sports radio. 


    Some of the things they offer are Advertisement spots in this Advertisement Application you can fill out all your information to get a spot. And something that I think is extremely cool as a marketing major is that they do all of the market research for you and give you back the numbers saving you a massive amount of time as a business. They also offer a 10 day broadcast. And of course sports  commentary from fox sports radio


    I looked into some of the history of this radio station and here are some of the most interesting things I found. 


Ken Sibley retires from radio station KVMA after 52 years- January 8th 2014 


Ken Sibley has worked in some capacity at KVMA since 1961. He’s worked there full time for the past 45 years. And during all those years he has maintained a hyperactive community involvement outside of the radio job.

Sibley, a native of Magnolia, has, among other positions, served as president of the local Chamber of Commerce, the Magnolia Economic Development Commission, the Columbia County Local Emergency Planning Committee, the Magnolia Rotary Club, and as chairman of the Magnolia Housing Authority. His community presence far exceeds that of a voice on the radio.

Sibley, now 67, is retiring from KVMA. His last day is today, December 31. He and his wife Carol plan to relocate to Collierville, Tennessee, to be nearer to their grandchildren. A retirement reception was held for Sibley at the studios of KVMA on Monday afternoon. A steady stream of visitors passed through the hall of the station to congratulate Sibley for his long career and to personally express their best wishes and thanks for his efforts to improve the city and county.(Magnolia Reporter)


KVMA will move into new building in early 2012- May 6th 2011


Radio stations KVMA-AM and KVMZ-FM - the anchor occupants of a building on South Jackson Street for more than 40 years - will move early next year into a new station that will be built on North Washington Street.

The stations will be located near the rear of Summit Bank, between East North and East McNeil streets.

Ken Sibley, general manager, said the new station will occupy 2,500 square feet. It will be a metal building with a brick façade facing North Washington.(Magnolia Reporter)

  Suicide bombing in Islamabad kills 12, says Pakistan's interior minister - A suicide attack outside a court in Pakistan's capital Islamabad, has killed 12 people and injured at least 27 more, the country's interior minister.  Mohsin Naqvi said a bomber was planning to attack the district courthouse but was unable to get inside. Naqvi said authorities would prioritize identifying the bomber, and that those involved would be brought to justice. Jumaat Ul Ahrar, a splinter group of the Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility. But two local journalists have told the BBC that the central leadership has sent messages to them saying it has no link to the explosion. Suicide blasts in Islamabad have been rare in recent years. Footage from the scene on Tuesday showed the remains of a burnt-out car and police tape around it. The 27 people injured are receiving medical treatment, Naqvi said. 01 - Defining News - Isaiah Calvert

            The actual definition of news in the dictionary is: News received or noteworthy information, especially about recent or important events.  I think that is a perfect way to describe what news is, but I would like to go into that a little bit more. Everyone's definition of news is different, maybe not the actual definition, but at least what information people consider news. So, in terms of what news actually is, I would say it varies from person to person because one person might see some information and not consider it to be news, while another person can see the same thing and think it's not news at all. Does that cause it to not be news anymore? No, but it does mean that It is not news to a group of individuals, which will be the case for all information.
